Information On V and Wedge Belts

V section and V Wedge Belts rely on friction to transmit power. The angular sides of the belt contacts with the sides of the pulley and when tension is applied to the belt it wedges into the pulley groove. This traction between the belt and the side of the pulley generates the transmission of power from the drive shaft to the non drive shaft.

 
There are several different types of transmission belting:
 
Classical Wrapped V Belts, Section A, B, C and Z
These are the most cost effective form of belt design for the general industrial application.
 
Wrapped V Wedge Belts, Section SPA, SPB, SPC and SPZ
This form of belt is thinner and narrower than the classical design, mainly for space reduction. However their design enables higher power to be transmitted than the classical design.
 
Raw Edged Heavy Duty V Wedge Belts ( also known as Cogged Wedge Belts ), Section XPA, XPB, XPC and XPZ.
The cogged design of these belts reduces the bending stresses in the belt and can be used around pulleys with smaller outside diameters. This cogged design also allows these belts to operate in applications of higher temperatures as a result of more air around the belt and a larger surface area of the belt, basically these belts commonly run cooler.
The Raw Edged V Wedge Belt exhibits higher efficiencies than the Classical & Wrapped V Wedge belts working at higher speeds and transmitting more power.
 
Banded V Wedge Belts.
These belts are used in applications where single and multiple belt drives are impractical. They transmit much higher powers and also prevents turnover or jumping off pulley.
 
Multi - Rib ( Poly V ) Belts, Sections PK, PJ, PL, PM
This belts design is used on very high speed applications. PK section most common in automotive application.
 
Synchronous or Timing Belts.
These belts provide what is known as a positive form of power transmission. They consist of different tooth profiles that mesh with a mating toothed pulley to provide a drive with no slippage.
As a result of this design they are commonly used in indexing and timing applications.
 
These Timing ( Synchronous ) Belts are also made in larger width sleeves enabling you to cut them to standard or non standard widths.
 
Classical Timing Belts. MXL, XL, L, H, XH, XXH
These timing belts have what is known as a Trapezoidal Tooth profile and are the most common in general industrial applications of low vibration.
 
High Torque Drives ( HTD ). Metric 5M, 8M and 14M
These timing belts, as the name suggests, are used in High Torque Drive applications. They have what is known as a Curvilinear Belt Profile.
 
Modified Curvilinear Profiled Timing Belts ( CTD ) in 5M, 8M and 14M
These timing belts are used in not just high torque applications but also where high running speeds are required.
